Abstract

In the sphere of modern folklore of Bangladesh, Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan will be remembered for his significant writings and organizational and institutional activities related to folklore. Through organizational and institutional activities, he has made the modern folklore popular among the students and young researchers of Bangladesh. As a result of his initiatives, the enthusiastic researchers have involved themselves not only in the modernization of Bengali folklore, but also in training and field surveys. He has expanded international and modern theoretical and methodological practice in folklore by establishing connections between researchers and trainees. Shamsuzzaman Khan has emphasized on judging and analyzing the folk art of Bengal and the history and tradition of material folk art in the light of international scientific method. Professor Khan has expressed his own views on folk art and analyzed Bengali folk art by bridging the gap between tradition and modernity by accepting the views of folklorists and sociologists all over the world. This article reveals his deep understanding and modern perspective on material folk art of Bengal.
