'Azia' is a theatrical performance common among the 'Abeng' tribe of the Garo ethnic group. It is a kind of lyrical performance. It is more prevalent in the Garo inhabited areas of Madhupur in Tangail district. Besides, this performance is also known in Haluaghat, North Baromari, Koarpur, Kalmakanda and other areas. Azia is basically a dialogue based prayer song. These prayers can be varied. It is one of the means of expressing love between men and women. Azia is a traditional theatrical performance through which the state of ‘aspiration', ‘prayer’, ‘regret', etc. of human life is expressed. This includes prayers to the Creator, prayers for love to one's lover, prayers for peace for the soul of the dead, prayers for the return of loved ones after separation, and all kinds of prayers in human life. This article focuses on Azia performance and discusses in detail its various forms, styles, varieties and other related issues.
