Although the leather industry is known for its rich products, it faces a tough question in terms of reality and that is environmental problems and health hazards arising from tannery waste. This article highlights the negative impact of tannery waste on the environment and human health. More than 250 chemicals are used in leather production and the complex mixture of wastes produced at the end of this production includes toxic chlorinated phenols, chromium [Cr (VI)], sulphides, phenolic compounds, magnesium, sodium, potassium, azo-dyes, cadmium, cobalt, copper, antimony, barium, lead, selenium, mercury, zinc, arsenic, PCBs, nickel, formaldehyde resins, pesticides, grease and oil. Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) and chlorinated phenols are extremely harmful to organisms and humans as well as the environment. Water pollution from tannery effluents poses a serious threat to the aquatic environment by altering water quality and destroying biodiversity. Also, tannery wastes containing leftover and trimmed hides pose a serious risk of land pollution. Land pollution has a significant negative impact on vegetation and local agriculture, which perpetuates the spread of that pollution through the food chain. Similarly, air pollution is another detrimental aspect of tannery operation that emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These compounds can react with other pollutants to form ground-level ozone and smog, affecting air quality and respiratory health. Furthermore, direct exposure to tannery waste can cause skin disorders, respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen, increasing the risk of lung cancer, skin disease and respiratory damage. Mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds in waste materials can cause genetic mutations to cause cancer, posing a threat to children and the elderly and vulnerable populations. A comprehensive approach including regulatory measures, responsible tannery production practices and public awareness campaigns is essential to reduce these risks. By adopting these efforts, it will be possible to ensure a sustainable and eco-friendly leather industry that will protect both the environment and human health.
